NEWCASTLE, England (AP) -Swansea beat Newcastle 2-1 in a matchup of Premier League mid-table sides at St. James' Park on Saturday, with the hosts banned by FIFA from deploying striker Papiss Cisse.

After a scoreless first half, Miguel Michu opened the scoring for the visitors in the 58th minute when he headed in Pablo Hernandez's ball from close range. Jonathan de Guzman doubled the advantage in the 87th.

Demba Ba scored a consolation goal in stoppage time but the Magpies' comeback bid fell short as Swansea secured its first victory in Newcastle since 1980.

The victory was the just the second in 10 league games for the Swans, who moved up to 10th place with 16 points.

Newcastle, meanwhile, remained on 14 points and dropped to 12th in the standings after being denied the services of Cisse.

The Senegal captain was prevented from playing after FIFA invoked a five-day rule following his failure to report for international duty in midweek because of a back injury.

Newcastle claimed it sent details of Cisse's injury to Senegal's medical department, but heard nothing back being notified that they were seeking to stop him playing.

"I am deeply disappointed by the actions of my federation which have punished me and my club," Cisse said. "I love playing for my country and would only withdraw from a squad - for either a friendly or competitive game - for a genuine reason.

"I am fully supportive of the position my club has adopted in this matter and am sorry that the federation seems to doubt my honesty and integrity. I will now consider if I wish to continue to captain my country."
