I am interested in joining, but before I make a reservation I must ask: would we be able to play multiple characters?

Hmm... I would rather for now that you claimed one, but, if time goes by and there's still gaps, I would allow for you to claim two.
Who did you have in mind?

I'm am in love. With this roleplay.

And your profile picture but moving on. I would love to reserve a character as well. However, slightly insane was here first so I give him or her (sorry I can't tell) first dibs. I would love to have the Ginger One human however this is open to change since like I said Slightly Insane gets first dibs. ^-^

I would like to join this roleplay as well, however like sephiraph said, slightlyinsane posted first so, first dibs go to them. I would like to play the nerd though. I'm a patient man. I'll wait.

I reject your reality and replace it with my own.

It makes me laugh how cute some of the icons are here, and yet it's applying for a horror roleplay xD trolololol

Anywho, thanks for the compliment on my icon ^-^ I'm rather fond of it, and if Insane were to claim ginger, who would you take instead?

And Cheater, who would you like to claim, just so I know in my head which of the characters you'd like :3

Well, probably the land siren actually (Although I'm slightly worried as to the awkwardness of the role *blush* but I can certainly write the part). I've played a lot of hot heads and bossy people so I'm trying to broaden my horizons. ^-^

~Please and Thank You
~Sephy

**Plus, I'd love to play a bad guy/monster for a change.

I would take the nerd; if Insane takes that one, I'll take the Psychopath. Either one of those would float my boat... I just realized, both of those guys are on totally on the separate ends on the spectrum. I do have one question, I know how the siren, the psychopath, and the vamp got there, but I was wondering how the five guests got there? Was there a letter or something?

Edit: Completely off topic, but I feel the need to share, If you look at Brandon's gif for the entire animation, it looks like he's saying Chimpanzee. I realize it's not what he's actually saying, but it is kind of funny.

Ex-Thai PM in court over 'Red Shirt' protest deaths

Former Thai prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva testified in court on Thursday for the first time in connection with dozens of protest deaths in 2010, saying the authorities had tried to avoid loss of life.

More than 90 people, mostly civilians, were killed and nearly 1,900 were wounded in street clashes and a military crackdown on the opposition rallies, which drew about 100,000 "Red Shirt" demonstrators at their peak.

Abhisit, who is now opposition leader, told an inquest at the Bangkok Criminal Court into the death of a taxi driver during the political violence that the authorities were attempting to reclaim areas occupied by demonstrators.

"I repeated to officials that all actions must avoid any losses (of life)," he said, adding that a series of grenade attacks were caused by militants armed with M79 launchers.

Abhisit and his former deputy Suthep Thaugsuban on Monday attended the Justice Ministry's Department of Special Investigation for several hours of questioning about the events.

Observers believe the pair -- who were already questioned by the police as witnesses in December 2011 -- could face prosecution.

Thailand now has a new government allied to the Red Shirts' hero, fugitive former leader Thaksin Shinawatra, whose sister Yingluck is prime minister.

Thaksin was toppled by royalist generals in a 2006 coup that unleashed years of street protests by the pro-Thaksin Red Shirts and the rival Yellow Shirts, who claim allegiance to the throne.

Abhisit's government invoked emergency rule to deal with the Red Shirt rallies in early 2010, giving broad powers to the military, which deployed thousands of troops in the capital.

New York-based Human Rights Watch has accused the army of using "excessive and unnecessary lethal force" in the crackdown.

Suthep, who headed the government centre set up to deal with the Red Shirt protests, told the same court that he had not received any reports of deaths caused by the authorities.

A ruling is expected on September 17 in the case of the taxi driver, the first in a series of inquests to establish the circumstances of the protest deaths.

Mayweather associate gets prison in Vegas shooting

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? An associate of Floyd Mayweather Jr. was sentenced Tuesday to two to five years in prison for shooting at two men in a car after they argued with the champion boxer at a Las Vegas skating center.

Ocie Harris, 30, of Chicago could have faced up to 18 years in prison after pleading an equivalent of no contest to three felony charges in the Aug. 23, 2009, shooting outside Crystal Palace Skate Center.

Prosecutor Samuel Bateman sought a 12-year sentence, arguing it was clear that Harris and Mayweather were associates and friends, and that Harris shot seven times in the crowded parking lot at a BMW sedan with two people inside.

Six shots hit the vehicle, but driver Damein Bland and passenger Quincey Williams were not wounded.

Clark County District Court Judge Douglas Herndon chose to run Harris' sentences concurrently and credited him with a month of time served. Harris also was ordered to pay almost $24,000 in restitution.

Mayweather wasn't charged in the case. His lawyers didn't immediately respond Tuesday to a message seeking comment.

Defense lawyer Tom Pitaro argued that prosecutors tried to pressure Harris to implicate the 35-year-old Mayweather in the incident.

Police said the dispute was about a text message Williams sent to Mayweather, saying he hoped the boxer would lose an upcoming fight.

Police claimed Mayweather threatened Williams by saying he could have him "trumped."

"Ocie Harris had no reason to shoot at these two people other than the beef they had with Floyd Mayweather," prosecutor Bateman said.

Harris avoided trial with his Alford plea in April. He didn't admit guilt but acknowledged that prosecutors could prove two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one charge of firing a weapon into a vehicle.

Prosecutors dropped two attempted murder charges and one felony weapon charge as part of the plea agreement.

A separate civil lawsuit alleging Mayweather orchestrated the attack seeks monetary damages for Bland and Williams. The case is pending in Clark County District Court, with trial scheduled next July.

Mayweather's manager, Leonard Ellerbe, has characterized the lawsuit as an attempt to extort money from Mayweather and denied that he was involved in the shooting.

Police seized handguns, ammunition, bulletproof vests and two vehicles from Mayweather's home after the skate center shooting, but did not find the gun believed to have been used in the shooting.

Mayweather acknowledged being at the skating center but denied knowing anyone named Ocie and having any knowledge of a shooting. His lawyer, Richard Wright, said at the time that Mayweather was at the rink with his children, and the guns seized from his home were taken from security guards and registered to them.

Mayweather got out of jail earlier this month in Las Vegas after serving two months of a delayed 90-day sentence following his guilty plea last December in a September 2010 domestic battery case.

Mayweather was named by Forbes magazine as the world's highest-paid athlete for 2011. He is undefeated as a boxer and was guaranteed $32 million for a May 5 bout when he defeated Miguel Cotto.

How to Prepare for a Home Appraisal

One of the things that you need to do to price your house for sale right is to get a home appraisal. When a professional conducts an appraisal of your property, he inspects that condition of your home to determine what would be the correct selling price for it. Even if the appraiser normally checks things that cannot be changed at that moment, like the number of rooms and the size of the property itself, you can still let the appraiser get a great impression of your home with these suggestions.

  1. List down all of the things that you have upgraded in your house, like replacing the roof, installing new cabinets and floorings and upgrading appliances. If the appraiser knows about these improvements right away, he can easily determine the value of your property by comparing it to others who have done similar improvements.
  2. Tidy up your house from top to bottom. De-clutter the surroundings, give the floors a good sweeping or the carpeted surfaces a good vacuuming and bring your garbage outside. On the yard, cut any outlaw grass or shrub, and put garden tools and toys in the garage.
  3. Take some paint and give some of the walls a bit of sprucing up. There?s no need to paint the whole house; find the surfaces that need it the most and focus on them.
  4. Be mindful of the parts of the house that need to be fixed. Repair all of the damaged doorknobs and window clasps of the house, the leaky faucets and the cracked tiles in the bathroom.
  5. Try to determine the selling price of other homes that are the same as yours, and find out the enhancements that they have made to their homes that helped them get this price. Bear in mind that because your home is a pre-existing property, the appraiser will be using other properties as his basis in assessing your home.

When you invite an appraiser over, it?s like you are having your home assessed by a buyer, so prepare your home to sell. When you show the appraiser your home in its finest form, it?s possible that the he will see that your home will be worth a high?

Earthquake 'swarm' in southern California: nuisance or threat?

Hundreds of mostly minor earthquakes, a 'swarm', have shaken California's Imperial County since Sunday. The swarm has caused damage but is not considered a precursor to the 'Big One.'

By Mark Trumbull,?Staff writer / August 27, 2012

A so-called "swarm" of earthquakes jiggling Southern California this week poses a relatively small threat to humans but does pose something of a geologic mystery.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Starting on Sunday, hundreds of earthquakes have shaken Imperial County, a rural area east of San Diego. Most have been minor, but some have been felt in surrounding counties and have clocked in as high as magnitude 5.5 and 5.3.

In the small city of Brawley, where the quakes are centered, they have damaged windows, knocked goods off store shelves, and bounced trailer homes off their foundations.

Why is this happening, and could the swarm be a precursor of the "Big One"?

Seismologists are confident the answer to the second question is "no." They say the quakes around Brawley may continue for several days, but judging from history, such swarms are not predictive of larger temblors along two major geologic fault lines in Southern California ? the San Andreas and Imperial faults.

As to what caused this week's swarm, researchers say it has to do with the region's distinctive geology.

"Compared to the rest of California, it's thinner crust, and hotter, and [has] more fluids," says Lucy Jones, a seismologist at the US Geological Survey in Pasadena, Calif. She describes the imperial Valley as "one big bowl of sediment."

"Those would likely be reasons that contribute to this," Ms. Jones says. "But we don't yet have the details of the physics."

The earth's thin crust in the region, and the proximity of hot magma beneath it, relates to the Imperial Valley's location at the top end of a fault in which tectonic plates are moving apart from one another to form the Gulf of California. The Brawley area, 100 miles east of San Diego, is "like the very end of a ridge that's trying to spread open. It's actually probably giving up on spreading open," Jones says.

When earthquakes make news, the event is more commonly a major quake followed by smaller aftershocks.

In the Brawley area, what are occurring instead are multiple events per hour. Such swarms are more often linked to active volcanoes than places like Southern California with little volcanic activity.

"There's potential for more in the Imperial Valley" this week, Jones says. Monday has been a quieter day, but still has seen quakes at a rate of several per hour.

It's significant, Jones says, that the Brawley zone has no big fault. For an earthquake to reach magnitude 7, a fault must be at least 50 kilometers long.

While not having large faults, the city is wedged fairly close to the Imperial Fault (where magnitude 7 quakes have occurred) and to the southern end the San Andreas Fault. Both those are "transform faults," where tectonic plates essentially slide along each other horizontally.

"The ability of an earthquake to trigger other earthquakes dies off with distance quite quickly," Jones says. The larger faults are far enough away from Brawley that, amid past quake swarms there, "we've never seen them followed by San Andreas activity."

Translation: This week's swarm, although felt sometimes in coastal population centers, appears to have few implications for the rest of California.

It is significant, however, for residents of the Imperial Valley, a desert region with irrigation-centered agriculture. The shaking Sunday put many residents on edge, and some 20 mobile homes at a trailer park were pushed off their foundations, the Associated Press reported.

The swarm also serves as a reminder, in California and elsewhere, that people be prepared for emergencies including quakes. The Southern California Earthquake Center offers a seven-step guide to preparedness on its "earthquake country" website.

What is diabetes type 1.5? - Health Niche

In the year 2000, the World Health Organization WHO reckoned that 171 million people all over the world were suffering from diabetes. Experts predict that by the year 2030, there will be approximately 366 million people affected by the disease. Diabetes belongs to a group of metabolic diseases leading to a high and life-threatening blood sugar. Most popularly, the defect is divided into two subcategories: diabetes type one and diabetes type two. Whereas type one is caused by a failure to produce the hormone insulin and often occurs at an early age, type two results from an insulin resistance developing with age. However, there is also an in-between type which has been coined diabetes type 1.5 and which is also known as LADA, i.e. Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults.

LADA: How come?

The in-between type is described as a condition in which diabetes type one develops in an adult age. That is due to the fact that the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells can occur at different rates. If it happens fast, it leads to symptoms at an early age (type one), if it happens slowly, it leads to problems at a later age (LADA). In order to test an emerging diabetes type one, and to avoid a misdiagnosis of type two which also happens at an adult age, it is necessary to conduct antibody tests. People suffering from LADA can show a positive reaction to the antibodies test, people suffering from type two are unlikely to do so. Laboratories own ELISA kits for scientific research in order to get the results.

Avoiding a misdiagnosis

It is estimated that 20 percent of the people officially suffering from diabetes type two actually suffer from type 1.5. In order to optimize the treatment of these people, which does not in every case require an insulin therapy but might also be managed through changes in nutrition and lifestyle, antibody tests should be conducted more than once as it may track the progression of the disease. How far medical research has developed can be seen in the huge amounts of antibody test applications offered at www.antibodies-online.com/.

Pets or ? well, you know ? | Good Faith Ranch

While I have always wanted horses, I managed to avoid keeping any animal in the ?livestock? category until I turned 50 and decided to get a trio of laying hens. Not realizing, of course, that chickens are ?gateway livestock.?

Within five years? time, I went from three slightly used chickens to 15 hard-working young layers. From a single raised-bed planter to plans for more than a dozen of them. From my childhood Breyer horses to three real ones. And, of course, from a quarter-acre suburban lot to Rancho Buena Fe?.

Coming next: Goats.

Nigerian dwarf goats, to be specific. Small, friendly and productive, with milk for cheese, butter and soap.

I mentioned on Facebook that I was getting goats, and publicly and privately I started getting word of goats who need homes. Farm sanctuary goats. Shelter goats. Mixed breed and meat goats. Because everyone assumes I?m looking for pets. Which I?m not, not really.

The only animals on this place who get a pass are the dogs and cats, and honestly, they contribute plenty in the way of emotional support and endless amusement. Everyone else contributes, in one way or another. As for me, I bring in the mortgage money and I handle all the care. The rest of the animals:

  • The horses get ridden.
  • The chickens (and sometimes the ducks) give eggs.
  • The goats (will) give milk.

The gardens provide food for me (and for sale/barter, eventually) with leftovers for the chickens, goats and compost pile. The compost pile gives back to the gardens.

But then, there?s the subject of meat. While I eat less and less meat over time (I?m becoming a ?Fork Over Knives? person because I feel healthier when I eat that way, and the meat I do eat is largely raised here or purchased from sources I trust)? my dogs and cats are carnivores (and so are yours, by the way), and they?re fed that way. I have two massive freezers in the garage, and I?ll soon be adding another to accommodate my home serving as a drop site for SF Raw Feeders, a spectacular buying co-op that supports humane, sustainable, regional animal agriculture ? small family farms and ranches.

When I first got those three chickens, back in suburbia, I mentioned to my very sweet neighbors (two sisters who share a home) that I would have extra eggs, if they wanted them. One of them said, ?No, thank you. We?re vegans.? After a little probing whether it was a choice for health or because eating animals was unthinkable, I got that it was the latter. So I said, ?You know, these eggs come naturally from chickens who live their lives to the best that any chicken could.?

?Oh no,? said the neighbor. ?We could never kill fetal chickens.?

?I don?t have a rooster,? I said. ?You?re not killing anything.?

She insisted you didn?t need a rooster to get chicks. At that point, I let the matter drop. I just didn?t have the patience to explain high-school biology to the two of them. And I certainly didn?t have it to explain why feeding the leftovers of industrial animal agriculture to their dogs and cats (in a bad of kibble) negated pretty much everything they believed.

Which brings me back to meat.

I do not need to squeeze every last dime from my animals, which is why those who give a lifetime of eggs (hens), or milk (goats), or service (horses) will live out their lives here even when they no longer contribute those things. Beyond that, only the horses are guaranteed to never be fed to something else here at RBF. One of my dogs has killed a chicken or two, and when that happened, the unlucky hen is eviscerated, plucked and put into the freezer. She later became become dog food, fed back to the same dog who killed her. That wasn?t my plan, but I?m not going to disrespect her death by throwing her body into the trash. (Chickens who are sick I kill swiftly and mercifully, but they are NOT eaten ? I won?t feed sick animals to other animals, which is more than you can say about a pet-food company, or even the manufacturers of your child?s school lunch.)

But killing chickens is not that hard to deal with emotionally, at least not for me. I am able to slaughter them so swiftly then don?t know what hit them, and then I able to butcher them. Since I made that leap that enabled me to do both, I stopped naming most of them. The two ducks ? Bernadette and ABBA ? are pets. The chickens are not, although there is always the possibility that one or two of them might become so, names and all. But as I said, barring accident or illness, the laying hens will live out their natural lives after they are no longer productive. The meats birds I?ll be raising next spring will not be. While they?ll be well-cared-for every day of their lives here, they will be raised to end up in my freezer, a few months after they come here. And I?m OK with that, too. The same goes with cockerels: We eat roosters here.

Pets or meat, humankind has also been allowed to make the choice. That?s why I have a pet duck who I took home after a field-training session ? one in which most of the other ducks died. The fact is: I have no problem with death, but I do I have a problem with cruelty. And? I really have a problem with people who cringe when I talk about killing poultry for the dogs or the table when they are buying and eating meat someone else killed after the animals were treated with less compassion than shown to your average end table. (I feel the same way about people who whinge about how ?cruel? hunters are, also while eating factory-farmed meat.)

With the goatly additions, though, I have to do some more thinking about what I can and can?t do emotionally. That?s because (for those of you unfamiliar with the concept, such as people who believe in immaculate insemination of chickens) to get milk from a goat (or any mammal) you need to breed the animal. The milk, after all, is intended to be given to offspring, not moochers like us.

While industrial cattle dairies would do what industrial chicken hatcheries do with male offspring if they thought they should get away with it (note: if you have a gentle heart, don?t look it up), what to do with males when you?re someone like me is a very big issue indeed. While the female offspring of a productive dairy goat is not problem to sell, there are not many ?pet? homes for neutered male goats, known as wethers. Then what? Goat meat is very good, but I know absolutely I couldn?t personally slaughter and butcher a goat I?d seen born and then raised. And I?m only barely able to cope with the idea of having someone else do the dirty work, slaughtering and butchering the goat for my freezer.

Yes, it?s the cute factor, I admit it, which is why I don?t ever plan to have meat rabbits, pigs, cattle (even nifty small ones like Dexters) or sheep. If I can?t find homes for the inevitable wethers or deal with having them butchered for my freezer, next to the chickens I?ve killed myself or the meat I bought from SF Raw ? well, I?ll have no milk, just a goat pets: The doe I?m buying, and the wether who?s coming along as a companion.

But pets goats I don?t want, and can?t have more than this ?starter pack? of two.

The first wether, the boy goat the doe I?m hoping to buy gave birth to a couple months ago, is staying, because goats can?t be kept as singles. He?ll be a pet to me and a companion for his mother. But that?s all the boy goats there?ll be here, one way or the other.

Image: The dairy goat I?m negotiating to buy now. Well-trained and well-mannered, an excellent producer of top-quality milk.

Don't drop ball on nuclear safety: IAEA chief

VIENNA (Reuters) - Improving global nuclear safety after last year's Fukushima disaster must remain an urgent concern, despite improvements already made, the U.N. atomic agency chief said on Monday.

"Much work remains to be done and we must not relax our guard," said Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, at the start of an IAEA-hosted conference aimed at enhancing international standards to prevent any repeat of Japan's reactor meltdowns.

"The accident may have faded from international headlines but it is essential that all of us - member states, the IAEA and other key stakeholders - maintain our sense of urgency," the veteran Japanese diplomat said.

He was addressing delegates at the extraordinary meeting of the 75-nation Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS), which was negotiated after the 1986 nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear plant near Kiev, which sent radioactive dust across Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and western Europe.

Li Ganjie of China's National Nuclear Safety Administration, president of the week-long meeting, said nuclear safety "must know no boundaries", even though this may raise costs. "Without nuclear safety there can be no nuclear power development."

Meltdowns at the Fukushima nuclear plant after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami sent radiation spewing over large areas, forcing more than 160,0000 people to flee. In the following months, all Japan's remaining reactors were shut for safety checks. Two reactors resumed operation last month.

FUKUSHIMA REACTORS "STABLE"

The worst such accident since Chernobyl also cast a question mark over the future of nuclear energy elsewhere in the world. In Europe, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium decided to move away from nuclear to increase their reliance on renewable energy.

The IAEA has said it believes, however, that global use of nuclear energy could increase by as much as 100 percent by 2030 on the back of growth in Asia, including in China and India.

Amano said "significant progress has been made in several key areas" after the adoption of an IAEA safety action plan last year, including assessments of safety vulnerabilities of nuclear power plants and improvements in emergency preparedness.

"I know you will make good use of this opportunity to consider further measures to strengthen nuclear safety throughout the world," Amano told the CNS states, which include all countries with nuclear power plants except Iran.

Some nations criticized the IAEA plan, approved six months after the Fukushima accident, for recommending voluntary steps instead of mandatory measures.

A senior Japanese official, Shinichi Kuroki, later briefed the conference about conditions at Fukushima, saying the reactors were stable but that decommissioning posed challenges.

Fukushima "is not in a position where we expect any further accidents," said Kuroki, deputy director general of Japan's nuclear and industry safety agency, NISA.

The reactors are "being cooled off in a stable manner" and there is "containment of further radioactivity emitted", he added.

Women with acute heart failure have similar in-hospital mortality to men but are less treated

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Women with acute heart failure have similar in-hospital mortality to men but are less treated in the real world, according to results from the global ALARM-HF registry presented August 26 at the ESC Congress 2012. The findings were presented by Dr John T. Parissis from Greece.

Acute heart failure (AHF) is a frequent clinical situation with high short- and long-term mortality as well as high hospitalization rates. The Acute Heart Failure Global Registry of Standard Treatment (ALARM-HF) is an in-hospital chart audit survey which includes patients hospitalized for AHF in Europe, Latin America and Australia. A total of 4,953 patients admitted to Cardiology Departments (67%) or Intensive Care Units (33%) for AHF in 666 hospitals among 9 countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, Greece, Turkey, Mexico and Australia) were enrolled. Women accounted for 37% of the study population.

The present study is a sub-analysis of ALARM-HF, targeted to explore gender-related differences in patients hospitalized for AHF. The researchers found significant differences between women and men in clinical presentation, co-morbidities, precipitating factors and treatment patterns. Length of stay and in-hospital mortality were similar in women and men.

Compared to men, women presented with AHF at an older age and with higher rates of de novo heart failure. Based on AHF classification, women were less than half as likely to present with cardiogenic shock than men, but more than twice as likely to present with right heart failure.

Women presented on admission to hospital with higher systolic blood pressure and higher heart rate. Women had higher left ventricular ejection fraction and the majority of women had preserved ejection fraction.

Regarding co-morbidities, when compared to men, women more frequently had atrial fibrillation, valvular heart disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity, anemia and depression. But women had lower rates of cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease (CAD), dyslipidemia, smoking and asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) than men. There were similar rates of arterial hypertension and peripheral vascular disease in both genders.

In both genders, acute coronary syndrome (ACS) was the most common precipitating factor for AHF. However, women were less likely than men to have ACS and more likely to have infection or worsening valvular heart disease.

On admission, a lower percentage of females were on angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), beta-blockers, aspirin and clopidogrel due to the presence of underlying co-morbidities and less CAD. However, more females were on digitalis and vitamin K antagonists due to the higher incidence of atrial fibrillation.

Regarding interventions, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and mechanical ventilation were equally offered to females and males. Fewer females underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery and were supported by intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP).

Despite the improvement of medical management at discharge, the aforementioned differences in pharmaceutical therapies (especially in beta-blockers) remained in favour of males.

Mean length of stay in a coronary or intensive care unit (CCU/ICU) was similar between genders. Importantly, the overall in-hospital mortality and the in-CCU/ICU mortality were also similar in females and males. "The presence of higher ejection fraction and less CAD in women may positively affect survival in women," said Dr Parissis, who is assistant professor of cardiology at the University of Athens in Greece and a member of the ALARM-HF Steering Committee. "On the other hand, the existence of other serious co-morbidities and under-prescription of life saving medications such as beta-blockers may counteract this positive effect on their in-hospital survival. This point may explain the similar mortality rate between genders."

"The presence of diverse predictors and pharmaceutical modalities may explain the similar in-hospital mortality rates in both genders," he added. "Perhaps there are differences in the pathophysiology of AHF between women and men which should be taken into account in order to achieve gender-tailored management. Finally, a more intensive implementation of heart failure guidelines is required to optimize life saving medications especially in women."

Several thousand rally in first significant protest against Egypt's new Islamist president

CAIRO - Several thousand Egyptians rallied Friday in the first significant protests against the country's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, accusing him and his Muslim Brotherhood group of trying to monopolize power.

The main protest in Cairo, which counted around 3,000 people and converged on the presidential palace from several locations, drew a far smaller turnout than the mass demonstrations that helped topple Morsi's predecessor, Hosni Mubarak, or the later rallies against the council of generals that took power after Mubarak's fall.

While the turnout was low for Friday's rally in Cairo, as well as similar ones in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria and elsewhere, the protests point to the fears many Egyptians feel with the Islamist president and his policies, and reflect the deep divide in Egyptian society over the country's future direction under Morsi and the Brotherhood.

Other than minor scuffles, the demonstrations in Cairo were peaceful. However, a mob wielding knives and sticks attacked around 1,000 anti-Brotherhood protesters in Alexandria. Several people were wounded and someone in the crowd lit a flare that sent clouds of smoke into the air. It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack.

Protesters accuse Morsi of monopolizing power and say that he exceeded his authority when he assumed legislative powers after forcing senior generals into retirement following a deadly attack this month by militants that killed 16 Egyptian soldiers in the Sinai Peninsula.

The protesters in Cairo appeared to be largely made up of supporters of the former regime and those calling for Egypt to remain a secular state. Notably absent, however, were Egypt's liberal and secular parties as well as the youth activists who helped engineer last year's uprising against Mubarak.

In Cairo, protesters carried Egypt's red, white and black flags and signs that read "Down with Brotherhood rule" while chanting "illegitimate" in reference to Morsi's wide-sweeping powers.

Khairy Hassan, an English teacher taking part in the rally in Tahrir Square, accused the Brotherhood of betraying the people.

"What is happening from the Brotherhood is not accepted by logic or by people," Hassan said. "What is happening is that the `Brotherhoodization' of the government."

Days before Morsi was sworn-in as president in late June, Egypt's then-ruling generals who were locked in a power struggle with the Islamists dissolved the Brotherhood-led parliament after the Supreme Court ruled that a third of the legislature was elected illegally.

The Mubarak-appointed generals also granted themselves legislative powers and the right to form the committee that would draft Egypt's new constitution ? a stab at guaranteeing the military power over the future direction of the country.

Earlier this month Morsi struck back, pushing the most senior generals into retirement and giving himself full legislative powers, adding to the executive authority he already held as president.

Protesters also took aim at the Brotherhood, saying it does not have the legal status to operate as a non-governmental organization as required by law and complaining that the group's finances are out of government purview.

The Brotherhood's political arm, though, known as the Freedom and Justice Party, was formed after the uprising and does have legal status.

The Brotherhood has been in existence for more than 80 years, and did not register itself in Egypt in the past because it was outlawed and persecuted under previous regimes.

"The Muslim Brotherhood should not be above the Egyptian law," said protester Mohamed Amin. "They have to adhere to the Egyptian law pertaining to political parties, civil societies and associations by paying taxes."

The Brotherhood, which has on numerous occasions in the past 17 months demonstrated its ability to mobilize thousands of people into the streets, called upon its members to secure the group's offices in case of attacks by protesters after some had called for violence against Brotherhood property.

2 killed, 9 wounded outside Empire State Building

NEW YORK (AP) ? A laid-off worker fatally shot an executive at his former company outside the Empire State Building on Friday, setting off a chaotic showdown with police in front of one of the world's best-known landmarks. Officers killed the gunman and at least nine others were wounded, some by stray police gunfire, authorities said.

The gunshots rang out on the Fifth Avenue side of the building at around 9 a.m., when pedestrians on their way to work packed sidewalks and merchants were opening their shops.

"People were yelling 'Get down! Get down!" said Marc Engel, an accountant who was on a bus in the area when he heard the shots. "It took about 15 seconds, a lot of pop, pop, pop, pop, one shot after the other."

Afterward, he saw the sidewalks littered with the wounded, including one person "dripping enough blood to leave a stream."

Wearing a suit and tie and carrying a briefcase, women's accessories designer Jeffrey Johnson walked up to the import company vice president, Steven Ercolino, put a gun to his head and fired five times without saying a word, authorities said.

A witness told investigators that Johnson shot Ercolino once in the head and, after he fell to the sidewalk, stood over him and shot him again. The gunman walked away and calmly turned up 5th Avenue, where he blended in with the crowd, police said.

"Jeffrey just came from behind two cars, pulled out his gun, put it up to Steve's head and shot him," said Carol Timan, whose daughter, Irene, was walking to Hazan Imports at the time with Ercolino.

Johnson, 58, and Ercolino had traded accusations of harassment when Johnson worked there, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. Johnson had been laid off about a year ago. Police said he blamed the victim, believing Ercolino had failed to aggressively promote his line of women's T-shirts.

A construction worker who saw the shooting followed Johnson and alerted two police officers, a detail regularly assigned to patrol city landmarks like the 1,454-foot skyscraper since the 9/11 terror attacks, officials said.

There were conflicting accounts about whether Johnson fired at the police officers or just pointed the gun at them.

Kelly initially said the officers were fired upon, but later said police were investigating. Johnson can be seen on video reaching into a bag, pulling out a .45-caliber pistol and pointing it at officers, Kelly said.

The two officers drew their weapons and fired 16 rounds, killing Johnson, Kelly said.

"These officers ... had absolutely no choice," Kelly said. "This individual took a gun out very close to them and perhaps fired at them."

Kelly said investigators believe police may be responsible for some of the injuries, because of the limited capacity of the gunman's weapon. Johnson's semi-automatic weapon was equipped to fire at least eight rounds; at least one round was left in the clip, police said. Another loaded magazine was in his briefcase.

Johnson legally bought the gun in Sarasota, Fla., in 1991, but he didn't have a required permit to possess the weapon in New York City, police said.

"New York City, as you know, is the safest big city in the country, and we are on pace to have a record low number of murders this year," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "But we are not immune to the national problem of gun violence," he said about the shooting, which comes in the wake of mass shootings inside a Colorado movie theater and a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

Robert Asika, who was shot in the right arm, said he was "100 percent positive" that a police officer had shot him. He also said he saw Johnson fire his gun at the officers.

Asika, 23, sells tickets for the Empire State Building's observatory.

"When I woke up this morning, I didn't even want to go to work," he said. "Something told me not to go to work."

The wounded victims were five women and four men, aged 20 to 56, authorities said. All were from New York City, except a 35-year-old woman from Chapel Hill, N.C. They suffered graze wounds or other minor injuries, and police believe that at least some of the injuries were caused by bullet fragments that ricocheted off security planters.

Ercolino's profile on the business networking site LinkedIn identified him as a vice president of sales at Hazan Import. It said he was a graduate of the State University of New York at Oneonta.

He was single and had recently moved to New Jersey after living for a time in Warwick, just north of New York City, said his eldest brother, Paul Ercolino. He grew up in Nanuet, N.Y., with his two brothers and sister.

"He was in the prime of his life," Paul Ercolino said, adding that the family was in shock. He said his brother was a gregarious salesman ? known to some of his nieces and nephews as "uncle Ducky" because of his nearly blonde hair ? who had followed his father into the garment industry, then later worked in women's handbags and accessories.

He never mentioned to the family that he had any problems with a co-worker, Paul Ercolino said.

Hazan Import Corp. imports women's clothing and accessories, according to public records. Calls to its executives weren't immediately returned

Johnson worked at the company near the Empire State Building for about six years and was laid off because of downsizing, Kelly said.

Even after he was laid off, Johnson would leave left his Upper East Side apartment building each morning in a suit, and often returned about a half hour later after going to get breakfast at McDonald's, his neighbors said.

"He was always alone," said Gisela Casella, who lived a few floors above him. "I always felt bad. I said 'Doesn't he have a girlfriend?' I never saw him with anybody."

His superintendent, Guillermo Suarez, said he lived alone in a one-bedroom apartment that he was subletting from someone else. He called him a "very likable guy," who always wore a suit.

At the scene, New Yorkers took to Twitter and the photo-sharing service Instagram to post photos from the bloody sidewalk, just as they had less than two weeks ago when police shot a knife-wielding man on a Saturday night in Times Square. One office worker took an overhead shot of a pool of blood outside the Empire State Building.

"We were just working here and we just heard bang, bang, bang!" said Mohammed Bachchu, 22, of Queens, a worker at a nearby souvenir shop. He said he rushed from the building and saw seven people lying on the ground, covered in blood.

Queens resident Rebecca Fox, 27, said she saw people running down the street and initially thought it was a celebrity sighting, but then saw a woman shot in the foot and a man dead on the ground.

"I was scared and shocked and literally shaking," she said. She said police seemed to appear in seconds. "It was like 'CSI,' but it was real."

Hassam Cissa, 22, of the Bronx, said he saw two bodies on the ground and police applying a white cloth to a man's stomach wound.

Gunshots so close to one of the city's leading tourist attractions immediately prompted fears of terrorism, but federal officials said that wasn't the case, and a guard at skyscraper said it didn't involve the parts of the building where tourists gather to visit the skyscraper.

In 1997, a gunman opened fire on the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building, killing one tourist and wounding six others before fatally shooting himself.

Metal detectors and bag searchers have been standard at the 102-story skyscraper since the 1997 shooting.

Millions of tourists visiting New York ascend its heights to gape over the city from its observation deck, made famous in films such as "Sleepless in Seattle." It was 1933's "King Kong" that showed a giant ape clutching Fay Wray and fending off airplanes atop the tower.

The skyscraper and its observatories remained open throughout the mayhem Friday, the building's owner said.

"This unfortunate event had nothing to do with the Empire State Building and with terrorism," said Anthony Malkin of Malkin Holdings.

Coach quote
The (current) seniors certainly played a large part in our success last year. But we also had strong senior leadership last year so we only asked them really to play football. I have five sophomores and one freshman up; there will be a mix of sophomores and juniors that have no experience with a talented group of seniors with experience.

Why Flowers Are A Cheaper And Better Gift Than Diamonds

During special occasions, most men are caught in a dilemma of selecting the perfect gift for their dearest women. We own a flower Thailand network where many people send a flower gift to Thailand for birthdays and more. Commonly, men are compelled to buy expensive gifts like gadgets, signature perfumes and clothing, and jeweleries made of precious stones like diamond for they think that women would be most happy to receive them. But what if you are confined to a limited budget such that you cannot afford those gifts? By reading the rest of the article, be prepared to know the reason why a flower gift is a better alternative to expensive gifts like diamonds.

1. Flowers don't hurt your pocket at all - they are either cheap or free.

Flowers are abundant in nature. As such, if you don't have enough money to buy flowers that are sold by florists - you can always pick some from Mother Nature. There are many sources where you can probably pick an enough bunch. Ask your kind neighbour to give you some. Roadsides, mountain slopes, and nearby prairies may also be good sources. Your girlfriend or wife will be more than happy to receive the flowers because they knew you really exerted effort to pick them.

2. Flowers are earth's friends - they are also non-toxic.

Another reason why flowers are considered better gifts is due to their harmless characteristics. Their assortment of colours and their fresh fragrances can captivate anyone's heart - especially women. Unlike other gifts that contribute to the worsening problems associated with improper waste disposal - flowers are the exact opposite. This is because flowers are biodegradable and can decompose in a few days.

3. Flowers are languages themselves - various colours and species convey different messages.

According to the traditions which were passed down from the ancient times, flowers relay different messages. The modern times adopted the concept very well. As such different colours of flowers as well as their various species are interpreted in diverse meanings. Red roses represent tender love and affection. Pink roses are used to denote passion and romance. Yellow flowers are commonly given to family and friends to signify the Philia principle of love. White flowers show sympathy and are thus usually given to those who are sick or to those who are grieving.

4. Flowers can be mixed with other items - they add meaning and value.

Flowers have always been a part of gift-giving ideas. Due to this, flowers are almost always readily available in gift shops. They can perfectly match any gift item to add more meaning. For instance, flowers can always match chocolates and stuffed toys.

5. Flowers can be given to anyone - even to a guy!

The times have really changed fast. Flowers that are traditionally given to women as gifts can now be given as gifts to men - without creating much fuzz or issue. You just have to add masculinity to them. Add green flowers like cymbidium orchids and carnations or choose flowers that have spicy, musky, or earthy scents like delphinium, lupine and bluebells. Arrange them in simple ways and absent of any effeminate designs.

Flowers aside from being timeless gifts can be regarded as cheaper and better ways to make your loved ones happy. They may not have the complexities of gadgets, or the brilliance of diamonds - but they reflect love and affection in their simplest and purest forms.

Next, find out more on why flowers are a cheaper and better gift than diamonds!
