Microsoft Looms As White Knight For RIM

How IT Views RIM's Future: Exclusive Research

(click image for larger view and for slideshow) Execs from Microsoft and RIM met earlier this year to discuss a partnership that would see RIM ditch its Blackberry OS in favor of Redmond's Windows Phone as the main operating system for its smartphones, according to a published report.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is said to have huddled with RIM executives after former RIM co-chiefs Jim Balsille and Mike Lazaridis left the company in January. Ballmer pitched a plan under which RIM would drop its own OS for Windows Phone, Reuters reported Friday.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based smartphone maker rejected the proposal, preferring instead to go forward with BlackBerry 10, according to the news agency.

But there is said to be renewed pressure on current RIM CEO Thorsten Heins to seek other alternatives in the wake of the company's announcement that BlackBerry 10 would be delayed until 2013. The options include reengaging with Microsoft, adopting Google's Android OS, or abandoning hardware and building a business around its mobile networking operations for corporations.

"They need to get to a strategic decision soon," said Wedbush Securities analyst Scott Sutherland. "Even though it may cause some near-term pain if you separate the business, it might be the best course of action," he said, according to Reuters.

RIM's present troubles represent a big comedown for a company that once dominated the enterprise mobile market, and whose platform was so addictive it was dubbed CrackBerry. The roster of loyal customers who couldn't put down their BlackBerrys even included President Obama.

But RIM's failure to respond to innovations from competitors such as Apple and Google put the company into a spiral from which it has not recovered. A number of observers say Balsille lost focus due to a lengthy legal battle involving his efforts to bring the National Hockey League's Phoenix Coyotes to Ontario.

Even if RIM does team with Microsoft, there's no guarantee that such a move would resurrect the company's fortunes. As of April, Redmond held just 4% of the U.S. smartphone OS market, according to Comscore. RIM itself held 11.6%, down from 15.2% in January. Apple held 31.4%, while market leader Google had 50.8% of the market. Microsoft is hoping the launch of Windows Phone 8, slated for later this year, will boost its numbers.

RIM shares plunged almost 18% in morning trading Friday, to $7.94.

15 Great Films About Failing Relationships | The Playlist

After doing the rounds on VoD for a few weeks, where many of you will have seen it, Sarah Polley's "Take This Waltz" starts to roll out in theaters from tomorrow, and we can't recommend it enough; it's a messy, sometimes frustrating film, but a deeply felt, beautifully made and wonderfully acted one, and we named it last week as one of the best of the year so far. It is not, however, recommended as a date movie, fitting into a long cinematic tradition of painful examinations of broken, decaying, collapsing or dead relationships.

After all, it's one of the more universal human experiences; unless you get very lucky, everyone who falls in love will at some point have the wrenching experience of falling out of it, or being fallen out of love with. And when done best in film, it can be bruising and borderline torturous for a filmmaker and an audience, but also cathartic and healing. To mark the opening of "Take This Waltz" (and again, we can't emphasize enough that you should go and see it), we've pulled together a selection of our favorite films revolving around the end of love affairs, relationships and marriages. Of course, it's a subjective and somewhat random selection, and certainly not definitive, so if we've missed your favorite, you can speak your piece in the comments section below.

"5x2" (2003)
The concept of telling a story backwards is not, at this point, a boldly original one; Harold Pinter had done it with "Betrayal" decades ago, and Francois Ozon's "5x2," which like the Pinter play shows the dissolution of a relationship over the years, starting at the end and picking up with the first meeting, followed right on the heels of both Christopher Nolan's "Memento" and Gaspar Noe's "Irreversible." But Ozon's piece is defined not just by its tight formalism -- as the title might suggest, 5 self-contained scenes of roughly equal length -- but by what it doesn't show, what's absent in the gaps of months and years that we don't see. Beginning with the divorce hearing of Gilles (St?phane Freiss) and Marion (Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi), after which they go to a hotel for one final fuck, we track back through a dinner party that shows their relationship in its final fractures, the birth of their child, their wedding night, and their first meeting, each sketched out with the director's fine ability to say a lot with a little, and never feeling gimmicky in its structure. It's a bleak film, to be certain -- as with Noe's, the 'happiness' of the ending/beginning is undercut by what we've seen coming before/after. But there's also a specificity and a compassion to the relationship in question; no one partner is more at fault than the other, and it feels more that they're two people who simply weren't ever meant to be together. It's one of the most incisive and powerful films about marriage in recent memory, and deserves entirely to sit alongside Bergman, Fassbinder, Nichols et al.

?An Unmarried Woman? (1978)
Less the depiction of a crumbling relationship, like most of the films in this piece, than a portrait of what happens in the aftermath. Something of a mainstream breakthrough for Paul Mazursky, one of American cinema's more underrated talents (the man behind "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice," "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" and "Enemies: A Love Story," among others). It's a pretty simple set-up; well-to-do New Yorker Erica (Jill Clayburgh) thinks she has pretty much the perfect life, which swiftly implodes when her husband (Michael Murphy) tells her he's in love with another woman. She gets divorced, goes into therapy, starts dipping her toes into the dating scene, and eventually falls for a British artist (Alan Bates). Aspects of the film feel a little dated at this point -- not least Bill Conti's score -- but Mazursky treats everything with a light touch without ever sacrificing character integrity, and creates something close to a contemporaneous equivalent to the 'women's pictures' of the 1940s. Mazursky always wrote well for women -- as is clear in the scenes with Erica and her friends, which are forthright and funny, a clear precursor to something like "Sex & The City" -- but Erica might be his finest creation, a complex, ever-evolving character, and Clayburgh (who sadly passed away in 2010, having completed a wonderful cameo in "Bridesmaids"), in a career-best performance, makes every inch of her transformation into not just an 'unmarried' woman, but an independent one, credible and compelling; one can't help but feel she was a little cheated when Jane Fonda beat her to the Oscar for "Coming Home" (the film and screenplay were also nominated). It says something about the lack of progression in Hollywood that a part like this still feels like a rarity.

"Blue Valentine" (2010)
In one of the more head scratching rulings handed down by the MPAA, Derek Cianfrance?s brutal look at a dissolving relationship got hit with the dreaded NC-17 rating for a scene involving cunnilingus (a longstanding no-no for the organization, see ?Boys Don?t Cry?). With the R-rating restored, the picture was free to open in theaters - a premiere that was a long time coming, and immensely bolstered the reputations of Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling. While the former received an Academy Award nomination, the latter was inexplicably shut out, but not to worry, ?Blue Valentine? is hardly an awards-driven picture, opting instead for an emotionally hectic, complex and naturalistically acted record of spouses fighting to reignite a passion that has tragically eluded them. Cutting between the youthful past of promise and possibility and a crushing present where even the air feels hesitant to intrude on some of the conversations, Cianfrance lays bare all the things people choose not to talk about until you beg him to stop. Williams and Gosling are unforgettable and ?Blue Valentine? a simple story masterfully told.

Life on Saturn moon? Discovery of hidden ocean on Titan tantalizes.

Scientists already knew Titan has the building blocks for organic life in abundance. Now, the discovery of a underground sea with liquid water adds another intriguing element.?

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / June 28, 2012

This image from NASA's Cassini spacecraft shows Saturn's largest moon, Titan, passing in front of the planet and its rings. A new study released Thursday suggests there may be an ocean below Titan's frigid surface.

A global ocean appears to lurk miles beneath the surface of Saturn's moon Titan, adding to the allure of an object rich with the building blocks of organic life and often likened to Earth before life emerged.

Cassini has already found large lakes ? most likely made of hydrocarbons such as liquid methane ? on Titan's surface. But a team of scientists using NASA's Cassini spacecraft have now found indirect but telltale signs of a subsurface sea, perhaps of water as well as ammonia, which would act like antifreeze.?

The data suggest that the ocean, perhaps more than 15 miles deep, is sandwiched between two layers of ice, each less than 60 miles (100 kilometers) thick. It rides atop one layer of ice covering the moon's rocky core and appears to be capped with another ice layer that forms Titan's surface.?

Titan has captured the imagination of scientists hunting for potential habitats for simple forms of life for decades. The temperature at Titan's surface is unbearably cold, minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit. It is paved with the methane ices and other organic solids on which Cassini's Huygens probe landed on Jan. 14, 2005. Its atmosphere is thought to mirror the composition of Earth's atmosphere before the emergence of life some 3.8 billion years ago.?

As hostile as the surface seems to be, "liquids from below would enhance the possibility of life being on the surface" as well as enhancing the possibility of aquatic habitats deep beneath Titan's crust, says Dirk Schulze-Makuch, an astrobiologist at Washington State University in Pullman with a keen interest in Titan's potential habitability.

Thursday's report represents "a nice step forward" in establishing an ocean's presence on Titan, he says.?

The new finding adds Titan to the growing list of moons thought to have subsurface oceans. The icy surface of Jupiter's Europa is believed to hide a vast ocean, and data from Cassini suggest a?large, if not global, region of water or slush under the icy sheath of Saturn's Enceladus.?Neptune's moon Triton may also have a subsurface ocean, and Ganymede and Callisto, two more Jovian moons, also are though to have under-ice seas.

But Titan stands out because researchers know that organic compounds are abundant there.?

Researchers led by Luciano Iess, a scientist at the Universita La Sepienza in Rome, used radio signals from Cassini to track changes in the effect Titan's gravity has on the orbiter during flybys. These readings?allow the team to measure the strength of Titan's gravity in the regions Cassini overflies.

This process allows researchers to "weigh the moon, basically,"?says Sami Asmar, a scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and?a member of the team that reported its results on Sciencexpress, the web outlet of?the journal Science.

If Titan was solid, its gravity field wouldn't change. Even when the moon?comes closest to Saturn on its elliptical orbit ??experiencing Saturn's strongest tug ? its?mass would remain fairly evenly distributed throughout the object.?

But Titan's gravity changes as it progresses along its orbit, the team found. The side of the moon that always faces Saturn bulged?as Titan made its closest approach to the ringed planet.

"We caught Titan in the act of deforming," Dr. Asmar says.

This tidal bulge represents a redistribution of material within the moon's interior ? a telltale sign that there is likely a fluid layer in the moon's interior.

It is as though Titan's rocky core with its icy cover was being drawn through the global subsurface ocean toward Jupiter as the moon made its closest approach, creating the bulge.

The friction of the moon's tidal interaction with Saturn generates heat, which could help sustain the ocean's liquid state ? as is the case within Enceladus and Europa.

The observation of a global ocean beneath Titan's icy exterior is indirect, Asmar says,?"But it's real evidence."

Perks Per Pay ? Inspired Employee Benefits Increase Productivity ...

Employee BenefitsSome of the best companies to work for offer their employees more than just 100 percent health care, shared work programs, onsite childcare, and paid sabbaticals. Google?s sweet perks include onsite haircuts and eyebrow shaping; Wegmans gives away coupons every Christmas, and Four Seasons Hotel & Resorts lets six-month to one year employees stay at any location for three full nights. But you needn?t employ thousands of people or produce multi-million dollar revenues to provide the ideal employee benefits to reward and engage your workforce.

Employee satisfaction hinges on a number of factors so it isn?t just about matching pay for performance and skill sets. Workers consider cash compensation along with leadership driven by principles and dependability, the company?s future direction, work challenges, and extraordinary perks as their basis for a truly rewarding job. A company that suffers from a high incidence of employee turnover may be lacking in one or two of those considerations. If the problem lies with your company?s financial capacity to provide such perks, you can still give an employee benefits program that doesn?t create a significant hole in your business costs.

You can sign up with a company that offers easy-to-implement yet innovative rewards programs to allow you to introduce work benefits without spending too much. The ideal rewards program company will provide sizeable discounts on premier products and services around Australia. Don?t just give your workforce 20 to 30 percent discounts from travel agencies or tech shops. Most of the time, the simplest of pleasures?in significant amounts?can provide the best results.

Keeping your employees happy can be as simple as helping them meet their basic needs. For instance, your benefits program could award high-performing employees with big discount cards to Coles for their groceries or weekly movie vouchers for their family?s entertainment needs (with the escalating cost of movie tickets, this will certainly be appreciated). You might even make an effort to find out what a majority of your best employees actually enjoy doing on their time off from work and use those to convey your appreciation for their efforts and achievements.

Your benefits program will create better impact if it?s applicable to all employees and not just the consistent top performers. Using benefits as merely a reward system isn?t maximising their capabilities, and it can even fuel the loss of confidence in some of your workers. By offering the same privileges to all your employees?whether they are your top sales person or not?you enable and motivate your workforce to produce better results.

It seems, as studies have confirmed, that productivity and profitability aren?t dependent solely on the knowledge and skills of your workforce. Gallup?s most recent research indicates that your employees? feelings are directly related to corporate outcomes. In the U.S., an estimated $300 billion in lost revenue has been attributed to disengaged employees.

Employee rewards that create a significant impact on the daily life of your workers are an excellent way to engage them. When you?ve got more employees smiling as they do their work, you?ll inevitably see positive results when your quarterly profits report comes in.

Instagram for Android now lets users automatically share photos they like directly to Facebook

Instagram for Android

When Facebook acquired Instagram nearly three months ago now, we knew there would be some enhanced Facebook integration coming eventually. As it so happens, eventually is right now as the latest Instagram for Android update allows users to automatically share photos they like directly to Facebook.

But as iMore's Leanna Lofte points out, there are more than a few privacy concerns associated with this. Once you've opted into Facebook sharing, there's no way to control how far they can be shared --

What I find even more bothersome than the existence of this new sharing likes to Facebook feature is the fact that I don't have an option for my photos to not be shared to Facebook when someone likes it. They are my photos, after all, and perhaps there are some of them that I wish to exist only in the ?Instagram world. I actually do this at times -- post a photo to Instagram that I intentionally choose not to share to Facebook or Twitter. That's why the ability to share a photo to Twitter requires a deliberate action. Now if I specifically choose not to share a photo outside of Instagram, and a few people like it, Facebook can potentially broadcast it to thousands of people i don't know. Awesome.

So there's that. Other bug fixes are included too. The app now allows for searching of users and tags in the Explore tab but Facebook wants to be front and center with this release. The update is available for download right now so load up the Google Play Store or grab it from the link you'll find below.

How Can Tools Help With Your DIY? | Home Improvement Contractors

DIY is always cheaper than getting someone in to do a job on the house. There are certain jobs that require professionals such as roofing or plumbing, but a lot can be done on your own with every day tools. Tasks such as fitting carpet or a banister can be done with careful teamwork and the right tools at a fraction of the cost of professionals.

Getting the odd jobs around the house done is both necessary and enjoyable. Fathers and sons can get together to complete the small jobs that have been bugging the family for a while and get them fixed. This is great for family bonding and also feeling more comfortable at home.

There are usually several projects running within a home at a time. The reason for this is that homes are a full-time job in themselves and require attention if they are to remain in pristine condition. This is where DIY is at its most useful and necessary.

Building stuff by yourself is loads of fun. You can build anything all you need to do is have the vision to see it through. Tools also help out if you?re trying to build something as there can be things that you can?t simply do with your bare hands.

Getting new tools is awesome because there are so many out there. Having a really nice set makes you feel great and like you can do anything in the world. This is the right attitude to have as it means you?re more open to DIY in the future.

Thanks to the massive rage of tools out there, people are able to undertake hundreds of different jobs with their hundreds of different corresponding tools. This is great for those that like to have everything, and even better for gadget lovers thanks to the innovative range for every tool.

TW Wholesale is a supplier of tools and equipment. The large range of SIP air compressors they have on offer is second to none and brings customers everything they need.. This article, How Can Tools Help With Your DIY? is available for free reprint.

Woody Allen works his movie therapy in 'To Rome'

NEW YORK ? Ozymandias melancholia.

It's a psychological state that is mentioned by two characters in Woody Allen's latest film, To Rome With Love, which opens Friday: Alec Baldwin's wistful architect and Ellen Page's self-absorbed actress, both of whom claim to be afflicted.

It is also a rare clue about what makes one of American cinema's greatest and most prolific artists tick.

Borrowing from the title of Percy Bysshe Shelley's 1818 poem about a broken statue of a once-mighty king that is found in a desert, the phrase refers to a depression over the realization that nothing is permanent.

Don't look for the malady in any medical textbook, though. Instead, watch Allen's Stardust Memories from 1980, a caustic portrait of a filmmaker looking back over his life and creative output that stylistically echoes Italian master Federico Fellini's similarly autobiographical 8? from 1963.

"It is a phrase I coined and felt entitled to use again," Allen says while seated in the dark velvet-lined womb of his office and screening room on Park Avenue. "It is a contemporary syndrome."

Does he worry that his films won't be remembered? "I don't care about my work lasting. I would like to last. They can turn my movies into guitar picks. Nothing lasts. Nothing at all. Not even the sun."

Given such disturbing insights, it is hard to know whether all those years Allen spent in therapy paid off ? or just made his existential despair into fodder for future features.

Turns out the locale of his new comedy is the perfect place to experience this condition amid all the crumbling ancient ruins. "You get that feeling in Rome all the time," he says. "You are surrounded by what would have been a grand palace or building or statue. Now, like Ozymandias in the poem, it's nothing but a headless trunk."

He did find some refuge in the city's reliably delicious cuisine. "That is one of the great treats of being there," Allen says of his first filmmaking foray in the Eternal City. Jesse Eisenberg, who plays Page's admirer, observed firsthand as the director enjoyed a pizza. "He eats it like everyone else," reports the star of The Social Network. "One leg at a time."

At least Woody fans now know the reason why, after more than 40 films in nearly half a century, the 76-year-old director refuses to take a break from his pace of averaging a movie a year.

Basically, he doesn't want to think about being a headless trunk someday.

It also explains why he is not overly impressed by the fact that he just achieved the biggest box-office hit of his career with last year's dreamily romantic Midnight in Paris.

The most enthusiasm he can summon for the $60-million-grossing film that led to his record third Oscar for an original screenplay is to describe it as "a happy accident."

"I try my best on all of them," says Allen, who has had his fair share of misses ? most recently, 2010's You Will Meet aTall Dark Stranger landed with a tall dark thud ? mingled among successes. "Some work out nicely. Some work out not as nicely. Some work out better than that. For some reason, people had a great affection for Midnight in Paris. Who knows why?"

Baldwin, who appeared in Allen's Alice in 1990 and already has signed up for his third Woody vehicle ? a yet-to-be-titled project that starts shooting in August in New York and San Francisco? is grateful that the movies keep on coming. "A lesser effort by Woody is better than most of what is out there. If only every third movie grabs you by the lapels, it's worth sitting by with the other two and waiting. Like rings on a tree, there are so many levels to his work."

The setting sets the tone

Allen rarely affords himself the luxury of pondering the public's reception of his efforts, especially as he continues to explore shooting in places far beyond his Manhattan comfort zone. To Rome With Love, which reflects the major influence of Italian cinema on his work, serves up a quartet of humorous vignettes, peppered with unfaithful lovers and reflections on the nature of celebrity, with a soundtrack that is heavy on Volare and Arrivederci Roma.

Ever since he switched to European settings, starting with London in 2005's Match Point, Allen has allowed the mood of each city to dictate the tone of the movie. And his version of comedy Italian-style is very much a farce, albeit with an undercurrent of dark satire.

"There are such strong personalities to these cities," he says. "Rome is chaotic, hilarious, joyfully alive and full of farce. Paris has a romantic lovers' feel, a nostalgic feeling. In Italy, you don't think back to the earlier eras so much. It really came into its own post-World War II, and that is when Italian filmmakers began to define their country for Americans. It is very energetic and lusty."

As usual, the cast features Allen veterans such as Baldwin and Penelope Cruz (who in 2009 won an Oscar for Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona), along with newcomers such as Eisenberg, Page and indie darling Greta Gerwig. Homegrown performers include Roberto Benigni, an Oscar winner for 1998's Life Is Beautiful, as an average man who is suddenly hounded by paparazzi.

But the most noteworthy participant on-screen might be Allen himself, showing up in one of his own films for the first time since 2006's Scoop. The conversation turns bittersweet as he regrets that he can no longer pull off the wisecracking swain role that he perfected in 1977's Annie Hall.

"I would have liked to have played Jesse Eisenberg's part, but I am too old," he says. "I was always the guy sitting opposite the girl in the caf?, pitching her and making jokes and trying to make her fall in love with me."

Not that he minds Queens native Eisenberg, 28, as his substitute. In fact, he agrees that they seem to have been fated to collaborate. "He gets it right off," Allen says. "He speaks at double my speed. He is in that scrapbook of characters that I could be."

Instead, Allen plays an unhappily retired and somewhat neurotic opera director who pins a comeback attempt on his discovery of an Italian mortician who can sing like Pavarotti ? but only in the shower.

Though he says the retirement angle is parenthetical to the humor of the segment, it once again underlines his need to maintain his continuing existence in the world.

"I don't see myself not working," Allen says. "Not because of any great contribution I have to make, but because I would be sitting at home, brooding and being depressed. When I work, it keeps my mind on stupid, solvable problems. I'm thinking of the third act and how I can make it work."

Being cast in your first Woody Allen film has long been a rite of passage, and Eisenberg is no different from the rest of his generation in coveting such a chance. He was fascinated to watch one of his idols on the job.

"There is such efficiency on his set," he says. "He is so adept at handling all the myriad things that can come up. He does it with such ease. It is intimidating to work with someone who is a million times more interesting as a performer than you are."

No spotlight for him

As is his routine, Allen was a no-show at this year's Oscar ceremony despite four nominations for Midnight in Paris, including best picture. He can't even vote, because he isn't a member of the academy.

"I'm not a joiner," Allen explains while missing an opportunity to reference his hero Groucho Marx's infamous quip: "I don't care to belong to any club that will have me as a member."

Nor does the onetime stand-up comic who specialized in self-belittlement display his trophies ? his directing win for Annie Hall brings his Oscar tally to four ? in a place where others may admire them. "I hate to tell you where," he says of the potential mini-Ozymandiases. "They're in my closet on the top shelf. I'm not a person who has photographs around the house of movies that I've been in or people I've worked with or things I've won. It's always embarrassed me."

Besides, "I see them whenever I take my underwear out ? which is every morning."

German investor sentiment plummets

(AP) ? Concerns about Europe's heavily indebted economies sent a closely-watched survey of German investor confidence plummeting in June.

The ZEW institute reported Tuesday that its monthly confidence index dropped by 27.7 points to a level of minus 16.9 points ? its strongest decline since October 1998.

ZEW president Wolfgang Franz says the financial market experts who were surveyed are clearly warning against an over-optimistic assessment of Germany's economic prospects this year. Germany's export-oriented economy ships a lot of its goods to countries where the crisis is weighing on the economy.

"The risks of a pronounced decline in economic activity in countries with close trade ties to Germany are very clear," Franz said.

The experts' assessment of the current economic situation for Germany dropped by 10.9 points to 33.2 points.

Germany's economy grew by 0.5 percent in the first quarter and the country's government finances are in good shape compared to other members of the 17-country single-currency union. Countries such as Greece, Spain and Italy are seeing their economies shrink and unemployment rise as they try to cut their budget deficits by reducing spending and raising taxes. That removes the stimulus of government spending from the economy.

(AP) ? Greek election victor Antonis Samaras says he will continue efforts to build a broad coalition government, despite a refusal from the second-placed Syriza radical left party to join in.

The conservative New Democracy leader says he will seek to engage as many parties as possible in the power-sharing effort.

Samaras spoke after talks Monday with Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras. He said he would persist in his efforts because debt-crippled Greece is in "immediate" need of being governed.

New Democracy came first in national elections Sunday, but without enough seats in Parliament to govern alone.

UN observers in Syria suspend operations

BEIRUT (AP) ? U.N. observers in Syria suspended their activities and patrols Saturday because of escalating violence in the country, the head of the mission said, the strongest sign yet that an international peace plan for Syria is disintegrating.

Maj. Gen. Robert Mood said rising bloodshed over the past 10 days was posing significant risks to the lives of the 300 unarmed observers in the country, and was impeding their ability to carry out their mandate.

The observers were sent to the country after international envoy Kofi Annan brokered a peace plan that included a cease-fire that was supposed to take effect on April 12. But both sides have continued to stage daily attacks and the observers themselves have been caught up in the violence on several occasions.

The U.N. observers have been the only working part of Annan's the plan, which the international community sees as its only hope to stop the bloodshed. They were initially sent to monitor compliance with the cease-fire but ultimately became the most independent witnesses the carnage between government and rebel forces that have largely ignored the truce.

The Syrian government, intent on wresting back control of rebel-held areas, launched a fierce offensive in recent days to recover territories in several locations, shelling heavily populated districts and using attack helicopters over towns and cities.

U.N. officials have said that the opposition, in turn, is increasingly coordinating attacks against government forces and civilian infrastructure.

On Saturday, government troops kept up their relentless shelling of rebel-held districts in the central city of Homs, killing at least five. Another 12, including a man, his wife and child, were killed in overnight shelling of suburbs of the capital Damascus.

"U.N. observers will not be conducting patrols and will stay in their locations until further notice," Mood said in a statement Saturday. He said the observers will not leave the country, and the suspension will be reviewed on a daily basis.

"Operations will resume when we see the situation fit for us to carry out our mandated activities," he said.

The suspension signals the unraveling of Annan's plan as the conflict that began in March 2011 with peaceful protests challenging the regime spirals closer toward civil war. Activists say some 14,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

Western powers have stuck by the plan, in part because there are no other options on the table. There is little appetite for the military intervention that helped oust Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, and several rounds of sanctions have failed to stop the bloodshed.

The U.S. was now consulting with allies about "next steps toward a Syrian-led political transition," National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said, adding that "the sooner this transition takes place, the greater the chance of averting a lengthy and bloody sectarian civil war."

Vietor was referring to the two U.N. resolutions that detailed Anan's peace plan and called for political dialogue between the government and the country's fractured opposition. He did not give further details in his statement.

Mood did not elaborate or say whether the monitors might eventually leave, but on Friday, he said states that provide the observers were concerned that the risk is approaching an unacceptable level ? suggesting the violence could prompt the observers to pull out of the country at some point.

"The lack of willingness by the parties to seek a peaceful transition, and the push towards advancing military positions is increasing the losses on both sides," Mood said. "It is also posing significant risks to our observers."

The Syrian government said it conveyed to Mood its "understanding" of the decision taken and blamed the rebels, whom it refers to as "terrorists" for the escalation.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it had "clarified to the leadership of the U.N. mission that armed terrorist groups have conducted, since the signing of the Annan plan, an increase in criminal operations that have targeted, many times, the observers, and threatened their lives."

The opposition, for its part, has blamed the regime for the attacks near the observers.

Last week, an observers' convoy was blocked and attacked with stones, metal rods and gunfire by an angry crowd as it was trying to head to the town of Haffa in the coastal Latakia region, where troops had been battling rebels for a week.

The observers only managed to enter once government troops had seized the area back from the rebels.

On May 15, a roadside bomb damaged observers' cars shortly after they met with Syrian rebels in the northern town of Khan Sheikoun. A week earlier, a roadside bomb struck a Syrian military truck in the south of the country just seconds after Mood drove by in a convoy.

Still, their presence has been a crucial source of independent information, particularly as Syria bars journalists from reporting freely in the country.

Despite fears that violence could significantly worsen without the their presence on the ground, prominent activist Rami Abdul-Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it was better for the U.N. teams to leave.

"We haven't seen anything beneficial from them. If they are independent ? so what?" he said. "A lot of crimes happened in Syria, and they couldn't do anything."

He called on the international community to more actively intervene to halt the bloodshed in Syria.

"The situation can't get worse than this: are we afraid that it's a civil war? Well it is a civil war. The situation is difficult. The international community's silence on Syria is working to destroy Syria," Abdul-Rahman said.

In the Damascus suburb of Douma, where overnight shelling killed 12 people, activist Mohammed Douma said the presence of observers had been irrelevant anyway, adding that they hadn't visited Douma, a hotspot, in a week.

"But anyway, all they can do is record what they see, they cannot help," he said.

Police say murder suspect arrested at US border

(AP) ? The man wanted in a deadly armored car heist at a university in western Canada that left three armed guards dead was arrested at gunpoint by U.S. border officials in Washington state, police said Saturday.

Edmonton police Supt. Bob Hassel said in a news release that Travis Baumgartner was stopped near a border crossing in Lynden, Washington, southwest of Abbotsford, British Columbia. Officials said Baumgartner was in his pickup truck and was alone.

Police said a sum of money was found in the truck when Baumgartner was arrested. Police had earlier called it a "significant" sum.

Baumgartner, 21, had been on the run since Friday when four armed guards were gunned down, three of them fatally. He faces three counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Baumgartner was the fifth member of a G4S Cash Solutions crew that was re-loading bank machines at a University of Alberta mall and residence where the shooting happened, police said. The armored truck was found abandoned but running not far from the security company's offices. Dead at the scene were Michelle Shegelski , 26; Eddie Rejano, 39; and Brian Ilesic, 35.

"We're grateful to the border officials at Lynden, Washington, for their excellent work in arresting a man we believe was armed and extremely dangerous," Hassel said in a statement. Canadian police officials were on their way to the U.S. to bring Baumgartner back to Edmonton.

Employees at the nearby duty-free shop in Lynden said they watched part of the arrest from their front window. A worker who would only give her first name, Adrienne, said she saw two border patrol vehicles with lights flashing and officers standing outside with their guns drawn. She said she didn't hear any shots fired.

"It's pretty scary," she said. "Luckily nothing here happened."

Police had launched an international manhunt to find Baumgartner.

G4S Cash Solutions spokeswoman Robin Steinberg said the company would conduct its own investigation into the shooting. Baumgartner had only been on the job for three months.

"We applaud the dedication of the Edmonton Police Service, and other law enforcement agencies in apprehending Travis Baumgartner today," Steinberg said in a statement. "Our thoughts remain with the families and friends of the victims and also with the Baumgartner family."

Baumgartner's mother issued a statement Friday pleading for her son to surrender and apologizing for an argument they had.

Such shootings are rare in Canada, where residents are nervous about anything that might indicate they are moving closer to U.S. levels of gun violence. The oil boom town of Fort McMurray, Alberta, however, often has drug-related shootings, and Vancouver often has gang shootings. Gunfire at Toronto's most prominent mall this month left two dead and several injured and a shooting at an Edmonton club in 2006 left three dead.

Police said Baumgartner was driving his Ford F-150 truck with an Alberta license plate when he was arrested.

Steven Munz, a close friend of Baumgartner, had said that Baumgartner had been on the job for only three months and wanted to eventually become a police officer, but said Baumgartner didn't believe he had what it took. Munz said he had noticed a change in his personality in the last year, and that he had been irrational at times.

In a profile on the dating website Plenty of Fish, Baumgartner bills himself as an armored car guard interested in video gaming. A photo shows him shirtless holding a cell phone. He says he has a laid back personality and a "10" physique.

"I'm a great guy. We don't come around often," he writes.

But his Facebook page is much darker, quoting the character of the anarchist Joker from the movie "Dark Knight" and musing about "popping people off."

Baumgartner lived with his mother and step-sister in Sherwood Park, a bedroom community just east of Edmonton.
