Trading in on the notion that there can be an element of fun in mystery solving shows, the "Bones" spin-off "The Finder" (Thu., 9 p.m. EST on Fox) finds its groove almost immediately in the pilot. Walter (Geoff Stults) has an uncanny ability -- that may actually be a form of brain damage -- to find things. He saved Leo Knox (Michael Clarke Duncan) from killing man and earned a loyal partner in the process.
The team is rounded out by Willa (Maddie Hasson) as the troubled teen who lives at the bar Geoff works out of. She's there by order of the court and under the watchful eye of a probation officer who'd rather see her in jail, with an agenda of her own. She's also under the de facto protection of Leo, who's really taken to her. In fact, when Willa is caught in the line of fire by some dangerous men looking for their drugs from this week's client, Leo is there like a freight train to take them down before they even know what's happening.
Walter and Leo are helped in their cases by U.S. Marshal Isabel Zambada (Mercedes Masohn), and vice-versa. Walter is a little off socially, tending to say what's on his mind regardless of the consequences, so Leo acts as a sort of conscience and filter of normalcy as well, while Zambada is a much-needed professional liaison. It's the kind of simple television formula USA has built a brand identity out of.
