Watching major media coverage about Amanda Bynes recently, I hit my breaking point. Is the self-destructive behavior of a troubled young actress who used to be on TV really so entertaining or newsworthy? Not to me it isn't. I met Amanda Bynes a few times years ago doing award shows. She seemed like a very nice kid. I have absolutely no idea what the hell is going on with her these days, and probably neither do you. Clearly, this young woman needs professional help, and that professional help is definitely not celebrity journalism of the most predatory sort. It seems to me that our modern media acts more and more like a shallow pack of mean girls passing harsh judgements for fun and profit. We ought to stop encouraging this degradation of what constitutes "celebrity journalism." So as a recovering celebrity journalist, here's my modest proposal: let's all refuse to participate in the ugly blood sport of catching pretty young actresses fall apart. Who's with me?
