UNT will open an office in Thailand to better serve potential international student recruitment and the more than 1,000 alumni there.

The presence will provide a base for recruiting and partnership development in Thailand and throughout Southeast Asia in anticipation of increased ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) 2015 student and scholar mobility opportunities.

?There is a growing number of quality prospective students in the region,? said Richard Nader, vice provost for International Affairs. ?UNT?s academic portfolio and research strengths match the interests of many students in the region seeking undergraduate and advanced degrees. We want to be able to provide students and parents with information in Thai style. A local, culturally competent presence can make all the difference when choosing a U.S. university,? Nader said.

The new UNT Bangkok office will lead efforts to attract collaboration and to support development of mutually beneficial programs for UNT faculty and students.

Warren Burggren, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs said, ?In addition to recruiting, we want our university partners in the region to know we are there for them, to support UNT?s global teaching and research agenda.??

Among those in attendance at the Nov. 30 office announcement were representatives of the U.S. Embassy?s Cultural Affairs and U.S. Commercial Service, UNT?s partner universities, U.S.-Thailand Chamber of Commerce, Exxon/Mobile, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and Technology, Thai Research Fund and the Thai Office of the Civil Service Commission, the organization responsible for Royal Thai Scholar Fellowships.

UNT recommitted to its partnership with Mahidol University, and Rawlins signed a new agreement with the well-respected Chulalongkorn University.????

UNT also hosted an alumni recognition banquet for alumni living in Thailand. More than 120 alumni attended.

Rawlins presented a Presidential UNT Service Citation to the Thai Alumni Network and recognized 10 University Alumni Ambassadors selected by each UNT college for their academic achievements and service. ?

?Our alumni in Thailand have been outstanding in their support and enthusiasm for the university,? Rawlins said ?We are most pleased to recognize our Thai Alumni Network and new University Ambassadors who will promote mutually beneficial teaching, research and student exchanges, and help us identify the best and brightest students who are interested in the University of North Texas.?

Among the distinguished UNT alumni living and working in Thailand are Charn Uswachoke, chairman of BBUCH Holding Company Ltd., and Pradit Wanarat, vice president at the National Institute for Development Administration in Thailand.
