North Korea face U.S. in nuclear women's clash

LONDON (Reuters) - North Korea face the United States in an Olympic women's soccer match on Tuesday that will pit the hermit state against the global superpower it has loathed since they fought a Cold War conflict six decades ago.

The hostility is very much a live issue in world diplomacy, with Washington intent on frustrating the North's nuclear armaments ambitions. In 2002, President George W. Bush branded North Korea part of an "axis of evil", along with Iran and Iraq.

The division of the Korean peninsula has already made an impact on the Games after the North Korean women walked off the soccer pitch before a match last week because screens displayed the flag of their South Korean foes.

Rent apart by U.S. and Soviet rivalry after the end of World War Two, the Koreas have never made peace since the capitalist South, backed by the Americans, and the Communist North, aided by China and the Soviets, went to war in 1950-1953.

KCNA, the official North Korean news agency, has set the tone for how sports and politics can mix with an article on Tuesday entitled "Local People Delightful at DPRK Successes in Olympiad". DPRK is the acronym of the North's full name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The article quoted citizens lauding their athletes after North Korea made a strong start in the London Olympics, winning three medals in the first two days.

"HOSTILE FORCES"

"Some evil-minded foreign media asserted that the DPRK would take only one silver medal, but our sportspersons refuted such assertion with good results," said Kim Chon Sok, a department director at the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.

"The hostile forces had better try hard to get a correct understanding of the DPRK," said Kim, according to KCNA.

In theory, the Olympics is supposed to be a politics-free zone, but that has never really been the case.

In the early years of the Cold War, Hungary and the Soviet Union faced off in Olympic water polo at the 1956 Games in Melbourne, a month after Soviet troops had violently suppressed a Hungarian uprising against Communist rule.

The clash went down in Olympic lore as the "blood in the water" match after a Soviet player punched a Hungarian rival, drawing blood. The crowd reacted so furiously that the match was suspended. Hungary had been leading and were awarded victory. They went on to win the gold medal.

Organizers of London 2012 will be hoping that nothing quite as dramatic happens at Old Trafford, home of Premier League club Manchester United, on Tuesday.

The American women's soccer team, bidding for a third consecutive Olympic gold medal, have already secured their place in the knock-out phase of the tournament with victories over Colombia and France.

They go into the North Korean match as firm favorites and have little at stake beyond avoiding an embarrassing slip that would undoubtedly generate acres of mocking newsprint.

But the picture is very different for the North Korean players, who carry the hopes of a country where unsuccessful athletes risk rather more than bad headlines.

The North Korean men's soccer team were subjected to six hours of public "ideological criticism" in Pyongyang after they returned without a win from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, according to Radio Free Asia, a Western-influenced, pro-democracy broadcaster.

South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo has quoted an intelligence source as saying that in the past, North Korean athletes who performed badly were sent to prison camps.

But Jong Tae-se, a Japan-born North Korean striker known to home fans as "the People's Rooney" for his similarities to the England striker, denied on a South Korean TV talk show that North Korean athletes paid for defeat with their freedom.

REVISITING 1966?

On the upside, talented North Korean athletes can earn perks for themselves and their families in a country where most people live in dire poverty in the famine-ravaged countryside.

"Families (of footballers) are said to have moved to the best apartments of athletes in Pyongyang," Joo Sung-ha, a North Korean defector who now works for major South Korean newspaper Dong-A Ilbo, said on his blog in 2010, ahead of the World Cup.

"Especially, thanks to their sons, families from rural regions also obtained Pyongyang citizenship which is like ask for the moon. This shows soccer is the most popular sport where the country is putting its most efforts."

The North Korean women's team have a relatively distinguished record, having won the 2008 Asian Football Confederation's tournament. But they were caught up in scandal at the 2011 women's World Cup in Germany, where five of the players tested positive for banned steroids.

Russia plans to prosecute Putin critic: lawyer

Russia is planning early next week to charge Alexei Navalny, an anti-corruption crusader and a leader of the opposition, in a probe over losses at a state-owned firm, his lawyer said Friday.

The probe represents one of the most serious legal challenges yet for Navalny, 36, a charismatic lawyer who has twice spent short stints in jail for his role in protests against President Vladimir Putin.

"Alexei has been ordered to appear Monday at the Investigative Committee (in Moscow) to face charges over the so-called KirovLes case," defence lawyer Vadim Kobzev told AFP.

Kobzev said he did not know whether Navalny would be arrested but added he could face between two and five years in prison under the charges of causing damage to assets.

Investigators earlier this month re-opened a two-year-old probe against Navalny after Russia's top investigator Alexander Bastrykin dressed down his subordinates for closing it earlier this year.

According to investigators, forestry firm KirovLes company sustained losses of over 1 million rubles ($30,900) between April and August 2009 due to actions of Navalny who at the time was an adviser to the Kirov region's governor.

Navalny has denied the charges. A spokeswoman for the Investigative Committee declined to comment on Friday.

Known for his rousing rhetoric and knack for catchphrases, Navalny has emerged as the star of the protest movement against Putin's decade-long rule and one of its biggest hopes as a serious challenge to the Russian strongman.

Over the past months he tirelessly encouraged Russians to fight for their rights and published a number of reports exposing corruption in the government and state companies.

In April, Time magazine named him among the world's 100 most influential people.

Opposition activists and rights campaigners accuse the Kremlin of a ruthless crackdown on the motley opposition movement since Putin's return for a historic third term in May.

How well does Skype keep secrets? VOIP service beats back more questions

Skype helps keep more secrets than any software on Earth, but just how safe are those secrets? That question arose again in earnest this week, after a set of stories claimed new Skype technologies made it easier for law enforcement to eavesdrop on members.

With 250 million users, Skype ?owned since 2011 by Microsoft -- might be considered the world's most widely distributed communication tool. Because its software encrypts those conversations, it is certainly the world's biggest deployment of encryption tools.? That's served the service well for years: It has a reputation for helping dissidents foment revolutions, and for being a last bastion of privacy.?

Governments, of course, hate secrets, and secret-keeping technologies that might enable what they identify as criminal behavior. Skype makes it possible to have phone calls that can't be wiretapped -- making the service a battleground in this perpetual privacy vs. order fight.

Since Skype first went corporate in 2005, with its purchase by eBay, that battleground has grown even more complicated.? A scrappy start-up can ignore the Chinese government and the FBI for a while; a Wall Street company with billions in revenue cannot.

Since that time, privacy advocates like Chris Soghoian have called on Skype to clearly spell out its secret-keeping technologies and provide assurance that it's not cutting deal with government agencies, enabling secret wiretaps or other intrusions.? In his view, Skype has been coy, and only answered in generalities.

"There are a lot of people who deep in their gut mistrust Skype," said, Soghoian, a fellow at the Washington, D.C., advocacy group Open Society Foundations, which says it promotes democracy around the world.

That mistrust set the stage for a flurry of reports this week suggesting that the service is no longer fully private. A flurry of bloggers -- noting the introduction of centralized "supernodes" by Skype that might provide a central point for eavesdropping, and a Microsoft patent describing a technological method for eavesdropping -- put two and two together and speculated that Skype's communications tools were no longer fully private.

In a rare step, Skype responded with a detailed rebuttal on its website.

"Nothing could be further from the truth," wrote Mark Gillett, the firm's chief development and operations officer, speaking generally about accusations that Skype is acting "against our users' interests."? He issued a point-by- response to many charge specifically leveled against Skype, saying that nothing about Skype's "posture and policies" with regard to law enforcement had changed.?

?Supernodes,? which route Skype traffic through central servers rather than allowing point-to-point connections, merely improve the flow of information around the service, Gillett said. What's more, they connect only addressing information -- actual phone calls don't flow through those servers, so they do not provide a convenient access point for wiretaps. That denial is clear and specific.

"Skype to Skype calls do not flow through our data centers and the 'supernodes' are not involved in passing media (audio or video) between Skype clients," Gillett wrote.

Moreover, he pointed out, they were first deployed back in 2010, well before Microsoft purchased Skype. ?

There are, of course, plenty of other ways that law enforcement could theoretically crack its way into Skype calls. There could be a backdoor built into the service. Skype could create and keep a spare set of encryption keys to unlock message at government requests.? As Soghoian suggests, Skype could even authorize encryption keys that would allow the government to impersonate a user, and then perform a so-called "man in the middle attack," with a government agent secretly inserted into the middle of a phone call, able to eavesdrop.

Answering a query from NBC News,?Skype executive Chaim Haas, said in an email that the firm does not save keys for government use.

"Encryption keys ... are not revealed to users or escrowed to third parties and are discarded when the session ends," said Hass, the service's senior vice president for technology, emerging media and digital strategy. "(The) use of credential-based identities and end-to-end encryption to make 'man-in-the-middle' attacks very unlikely," he added.

Skeptics like Soghoian still aren't satisfied, however. He says the volume of the conspiracy theories from the past week shows how much people are suspicious of Skype, even if supernodes are the wrong reason to doubt the company.

"Skype is always very careful how (it) phrases things," he said.? "If they say they haven't changed their intercept policy since Microsoft purchased the company, then the question to ask is, 'What was that policy before?' If you ask them, they won't give a straight answer."

Indeed, the answer Skype gives consistently to that question is this: "When a law enforcement entity follows the appropriate procedures, we respond where legally required and technically feasible."

It's that ?technically feasible? part which bother Soghoian.

"Why don't they just come out and say how their technology works?" he said. "The company is extremely evasive and we wouldn't accept that anywhere else. ... Think about this: What other security company is there where the company won't describe how it secures user data, but people still assume it's safe?"

It's those assumptions that bother Soghoian. People say things on Skype that they wouldn't say elsewhere because they assume the conversation is completely safe from prying eyes.? If it's not, there's a real hazard.

"There's a solid body of research which shows that when people think they are safe, they will engage in riskier activities," he said. "People use Skype because they think it's secure, but Skype has done nothing to clarify what it does and doesn't offer." He's concerned that Skype is, in a sense, having it both ways -- benefitting from offering a communications tool with a reputation for being completely safe from government's prying eyes, while benefitting from relationships with governments that help its business.

Other technology companies, like Google, provide what are called "transparency reports," which give some information about the number of times they have fulfilled requests from government agencies. Twitter released its first such report earlier this month. So far, Skype has not done so.

Still, a transparency report is not likely to answer the key question: How safe are secrets on Skype? By the time that answer arrives, it will likely be too late to be relevant.? It's a bit of a Catch-22.? The day that data gleaned from a Skype-based wiretap shows up in a criminal indictment or lawsuit -- which is often how these mysterious business practices are revealed -- is the day that government agencies will no longer be that interested in eavesdropping on Skype.

"If people hear that Skype is not secure, they won't use it for those private conversations, and they will be less interesting to law enforcement," Soghoian said.?

Such was the case with once-popular encryption email service called "Hushmail." In 2007, it was revealed that Hushmail had helped the Canadian government obtain as massive number of emails while it tried to prosecute alleged illegal steroid dealers. ?Hushmail then fell out of favor, and became a less interesting place for law enforcement, Soghoian said.

"Several agencies learned their lesson from Hushmail," he said.? "They blew their cover ... that won't happen again."

Stock futures signal higher open; focus on data

LONDON (Reuters) - Stock index futures pointed to a higher open on Wall Street on Friday, with futures for the S&P 500, the Dow Jones and the Nasdaq 100 rising 0.2 to 0.4 percent.

European shares offered support with a second consecutive rise due to renewed hopes of more stimulus from global policymakers. The FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> was up 0.1 percent after surging 2.4 percent on Thursday.

The Commerce Department releases its first estimate for the second quarter gross domestic product (GDP) at 1230 GMT, expected to show the economy expanded at a 1.5 percent annual rate between April and June, down from 1.9 percent in the first three months of the year.

Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers at 1355 GMT is expected by economists to show a reading of 72.0 on its index of consumer sentiment, in line with a preliminary figure.

Samsung Electronics Co , the world's top technology firm by revenue, on Friday reported a record operating profit of $5.9 billion for the June quarter, as rampant Galaxy S handset sales helped stretch its lead over Apple Inc .

Merck , whose sales disappointed in the prior period, is expected to post moderate earnings gains in the second quarter, helped by growing demand for its Januvia diabetes drugs. Other major companies announcing results include Chevron and Legg Mason .

In late trading after Thursday's closing bell, Facebook shares tumbled 11 percent after reporting its first quarterly results since Facebook's market debut.

Amazon.com shares were also down 0.5 percent after the close following the release of its results. The online retailer forecast third-quarter revenue that lagged Wall Street's projections.

At 1430 GMT, Economic Cycle Research Institute releases its weekly index of economic activity for July 20. In the prior week, the index read 121.9.

Starbucks Corp cut its outlook for the current quarter, citing global economic weakness and a recent slowdown in visits in the United States, its biggest market for sales and profits, sending shares tumbling more than 9 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> ended up 211.88 points, or 1.67 percent, at 12,887.93 on Thursday. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was up 22.13 points, or 1.65 percent, at 1,360.02. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 39.01 points, or 1.37 percent, at 2,893.25.

Anderson never loses his core themes - young love, the need to escape, the bind and bluster of family. His "Kingdom" may not be large, but it is perfectly appointed.

Though undeniably smart and charming, "Moonrise Kingdom" loves itself the way the callow Holden Caulfield loves himself: unconditionally. Salinger understood the problem with that. Anderson may not.

The latest unadulterated delight from Wes Anderson, director of "Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox."

The usual complaints and caveats about Anderson - he's precious, his characters have no grounding in the real world - can be made about Moonrise Kingdom, but so what?

Anderson and his actors are able to convey more genuine feeling through these devices than most filmmakers can with more-traditional means.

One knock against some of Anderson's previous efforts is that they're too clever - so clever, in fact, that the humanity gets sucked out of them. That doesn't happen here.

"Moonrise Kingdom" is the type of movie that is charming for the soul and makes your brain happy in the process. All in all, it's just a heartfelt and well-written experience that will appeal to everyone.

These charming kids give "Moonrise Kingdom" the warm glow of a summer fairy-tale, one you'll want to hear again.

Pure Joy. This film's heroes may be pint-sized but their emotions and dreams are larger than life.

My immediate response is that it's a masterpiece and the best film to come out so far this year.

The offbeat, pixilated universes created by writer/director Wes Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox) are an acquired taste.

It's hard to judge a movie as a movie when you want to live inside it.

Magical Moonrise a Romantic Delight.

Intermittently amusing, distinctive, not always easy to digest

Moonrise Kingdom left me thunderstruck. ... Anderson contrasts a world in disorder with a well-pitched campsite, where everything is in its right place.

Anderson's movies work best if they're about kids or cartoon animals.

Among the all-stars, Edward Norton made me repeatedly chuckle, and it's always a pleasure to see Bruce Willis when he's not operating in paycheck-whore mode.

A sweetly kooky ode to the intensity of young love. The movie balances broad comedy with occasionally surreal quirk, while still holding the emotional center.

The adults who are so desperate to return the kid fugitives to their care actually envy the children's freedom, irresponsibility and, yes, love -- in a word, their youth: The kingdom that makes exiles of us all.

The frustrating Anderson is improving, and he may one day shed the collegiate hipster aura that infuses his work.

The plot isn't as fetching as the presentation, starting with the tersely whimsical dialogue. There aren't punch lines for big laughs, but rather a seamless series of non sequiturs for smiles.

It's funny, it's touching, it's Anderson doing what he does better than he's ever done before.

Wonderfully inventive and entirely immersing.

The great thing about Wes Anderson, other than his fabulously childlike imagination, is his deep attention to the smallest details.

As election approaches, candidates beef up spending

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Less than four months until the U.S. presidential election, Republican candidate Mitt Romney's campaign is beefing up on personnel and investing more cash internally as outside groups pour millions into television ads to help him counter Democratic President Barack Obama's messaging over the airwaves.

Obama's spending still dwarfs Romney's June outlays, with two-thirds of it going toward advertising, but federal disclosures filed on Friday show the Republican candidate investing more in his campaign's infrastructure, something Obama did months ago, as the race has been stuck in a dead heat.

Obama's campaign doled out $58.1 million in June, nearly twice as much as he raised, Friday's filings showed. Facing no competition within his own party, Obama got an early start on ad buys, framing his Republican challenger negatively.

Romney's campaign spent $27.5 million in June, nearly double the $15.6 million it spent in May and $12.6 million spent in April, when Romney first emerged as the presumed Republican presidential nominee.

Romney spent less than half of his June haul on advertising, Reuters analysis of filings showed.

The internal spending uptick was expected as campaigning heats up in earnest, but it raises concerns of burning through cash on expenses that are not direct outreach to likely or potential voters - something Republicans had repeatedly pointed out about Obama's spending trends earlier this year.

Now, the scale appears to be leveling as Romney added 125 new paid staff members in June for a total of 272 and spent $491,088 more on their salaries for a total of $1.3 million. He also spent nearly $440,000 on office supplies, furniture, equipment and other infrastructure buildup and equipment and $9.7 million on various consulting services.

Obama's campaign added 76 new paid staffers in June for a total of 779, paying them $2.8 million.

LAW'S LIMITATIONS

One hurdle for Romney is a provision of the U.S. campaign law that prohibits some funds from being spent until he is officially nominated at the Republican convention in late August.

Campaigns are allowed to accept up to $5,000 from one donor, but only half of that can be spent before the convention.

Romney's campaign has reported having about $850,000 walled off to be available only for use after the convention. He also has a joint fund with the Republican National Committee that presumably has millions set off for the general election but filings so far have not clarified how much exactly.

Romney's aides say the rule has put him at a disadvantage because Obama ran for re-election unopposed and Romney spent millions on a bitter fight against rival Republicans.

Obama has $7.8 million set aside for the general election.

"We ... spent most of our primary dollars on the primary," Romney told the Toledo Blade newspaper in an interview this week. "There are just many places we can't afford to be running ads. So we are massively outspent by a President that had no primary. And we are able to both shift into general election funds after our conventions, and we will be able to be more competitive, and you'll to see more of us as that occurs."

In June, Romney's campaign received $24 million in donations and had $22.5 million in cash on hand, while Obama's campaign received $28.1 million and had $97.5 million left in the bank.

Both campaigns also rely on separate multimillion-dollar war chests held by the national parties and funds shared with them. All told, Obama and his allies have far outraised Romney, but the Republican and his party have more in cash on hand.

'SUPER PAC' HELP

Obama's TV advertising spending has been effectively balanced out by Republican Super PACs, predominantly American Crossroads and the pro-Romney Restore Our Future.

Obama and Priorities USA Action, the outside "super" political action committee helping the president, have spent the past several weeks pummeling Romney's past as a private equity executive and painting him as an out-of-touch rich man.

Priorities earlier this week bought $4 million worth of ad time in three swing states.

Restore Our Future spent $7.2 million on ads that will run in 11 states from the end of July through August 9, while American Crossroads is spending $9.3 million on ads in nine states, defending Romney from the Democrats' attacks on his business record.

The Obama campaign earlier this week started airing a new ad raising questions about why Romney, a millionaire, will not release more of his tax returns.

Republicans for months have been pointing to Obama's rate of spending - for two months in a row now he's spent more than he has raised - calling it unsustainable.

"I trust the Obama campaign, who ran a pretty good campaign four years ago, that they can do it this time around," said Barry Goodman, a Michigan fundraiser who together with his business partner has "bundled" more than $500,000 for the president's re-election campaign.

"They must feel comfortable that they can raise more."

In 2008, Obama set a fundraising record of $750 million hauled in, but this year his campaign has been sounding alarms that thanks to deep-pocketed Republican outside spending groups, Obama could be the first ever incumbent to be outspent.

How I Beat MS: Tevia&#39;s Story | Better Off Well

Though I keep hearing the stories, I?m still blown away with amazement every time I hear another. Maybe it?s because I lived for so many years believing that illness was simply a matter of bad luck, age, and unfortunate genes.

People all over are taking control of their health by cleaning up their diets and removing toxins from their environments.

When our bodies are inflamed and full of free radicals, our cells weaken and sometimes die, leaving us susceptible to diseases like cancer, Alzheimer?s, heart disease, and, in Tevia?s case, Multiple Sclerosis.

While our genes may leave us predisposed to particular illnesses, the field of epigenetics continues to show that our futures are not pre-destined by them.

Here is Tevia?s story?

I was diagnosed with MS in February of 2005.

I?d been having vision problems as well as tingling and nerve pain in my left leg. The day I got the diagnosis, the neurologist gave me four pamphlets about injectable drugs, told me to go home and read them and decide which drug I wanted to go on.

She said they would schedule a rep to come to my home to show me how to administer the drug weekly- or daily- depending on the drug of choice. She also advised me to stop spinning (classes) as it would only make my symptoms worse.

From the moment I left her office, I knew I wasn?t even going to read about the drugs. After hearing her tell me they all have flu-like side effects after each injection, that was enough for me to know that there was no way in hell I would put that into my body.

A good friend of mine harped on me for several months about going vegan, as he was certain it would help.

At first, I stopped eating red meat, dairy, refined sugar and anything with high fructose corn syrup. Within a few weeks, I noticed a difference.

Within a month, my symptoms started to diminish. I was feeling so much more energy and my skin started to look better.

I still ate chicken and fish UNTIL I was stricken with food poisoning from chicken we ate at a restaurant. My partner also got sick, but she recovered in 24 hours.

It took me days to recover.

During that time, I started having nerve pain and was not feeling well. That was the turning point for me. I went 100% vegan and have never turned back.

Since going vegan in 2006, I have not had any symptoms of MS. Not one symptom.

As of 2010, I was told I am in remission.

I continue to spin 6 times a week at a high intensity. In fact, I teach classes at Up Dog Fitness in Santa Monica.

At 48 years old, I am in better shape than most 25 year olds.

People ask me often if I miss eating anything. I always say no because I?ve learned to cook great vegan meals and have mastered vegan baking to satisfy my sweet tooth.

I have never felt better or stronger and I know it is my diet.

I am mom to a beautiful, vegan 2 1/2 year old boy. My partner is carrying our second child, due in September.

I am beyond grateful that someone pointed me in the direction of a plant-based diet.

It has given me back my body.

Tevia?s Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients

2 cups of unbleached flour
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1/4 tsp of salt
1 teaspoon of vanilla
2 tablespoons of unsweetened applesauce
1 and 1/4 stick of earth balance buttery sticks
1/2 cup real maple syrup
1/2 cup of coconut palm sugar
1 1/2 cups of vegan chocolate chips

Directions

Mix together and then place on a cookie sheet ( I use parchment paper.), about a tablespoon of batter per cookie.

Bake at 350 for 7-10 minutes.
