Field event performers earn five top seeds

Staff Reports

May 16, 2012

WHITEHALL ? On paper, at least, Monroe County athletes should have a great meet over the next two days at the District 11 Class AAA Track and Field Championships at Whitehall High School.

Monroe athletes have earned the top seed in five field events, with boys grabbing four of those top performances.

The meet starts today with trials in the sprints and hurdles, finals in the 300-meter hurdles, 3,200-meter run and 3,200-meter relay, and half of the field events.

The meet concludes Thursday with the rest of the field events, and all running event finals.

East Stroudsburg North seniors Jarrel Bobb and Joey Clouse lead the field event performers with top seeds in the long jump (23-3) and shot put (53-8?), respectively.

Also earning top seeds on the field are Stroudsburg senior Jason Green (6-6, high jump), East Stroudsburg South senior Josh Helbers (13-6, pole vault) and Pleasant Valley senior Kelicia Harris (17-6? , girls long jump).

Stroudsburg senior Langston Northern headlines the area's hopes on the track as the top seed in the 100 (10.73) and co-top seed in the 200 (21.84) along with Nazareth senior Andrew Bridgeforth.

Northern also runs a leg on the Mounties' standout 4 x 100 relay team that is a full second, 42.34 to 43.34, ahead of second-seeded Freedom.

The top two finishers in each event, along with any third- through sixth-place finishers who better the state qualifying standard qualify for the PIAA championships at Shippensburg University on May 25-26.

Harris and East Stroudsburg South senior Dominique Homer are the co-top seeds in the girls AAA 100-meter dash at 12.34. Homer won the Mountain Valley Conference title last week in the event.

While Helbers is technically the top seed in the pole vault at 13-6, Stroudsburg senior Kenji Okamoto has also cleared 13-6 and will vault just before Helbers in the competition.

The boys triple jump, which is today, will have plenty of drama as eight competitors have bettered the state qualifying standard of 44-6.

Along with Bobb, who is seeded third at 45-7?, are Stroudsburg junior Dave Clowney (second seed, 45-11?), Pocono Mountain West senior Dwayne Vines (fourth, 45-5?) and Stroudsburg seniors Javaughn Patterson (fifth, 45-5?) and Quay Rogers (44-7?).
